In the post Meta writes:
"While premium game purchases still make up the biggest share of spending, IAPs have emerged as the fastest growing revenue stream on the Horizon platform. In the past two years, IAPs have seen substantial growth, especially among immersive titles (AR, VR, MR, and XR experiences that transport users into interactive 3D environments). This is also reflected in the fact that we’re seeing a significant shift in time spent on free-to-play apps on the platform."
The VR gaming industry is changing with lower-than-expected sales of premium apps, resulting in layoffs and studio closures. In light of these upheavals, Meta acknowledged that the ecosystem is shifting to new audiences and urged developers to focus more on the free-to-play model. Meta also said that consumers spent 12 percent more last year than the year before, driven by a significant increase in in-app purchases.
OpenXR is the open standard API for AR/VR/MR supported by the vast majority of the industry. The ideal of OpenXR is that developers can build apps that run on any headset, without needing to use vendor-specific APIs for different hardware. But the reality, today at least, is more complicated.
Pretty much every headset and runtime (except Apple Vision Pro and PlayStation VR2 on PS5) supports OpenXR, sure. But companies like Meta and Pico still also offer their own integrations for Unity and Unreal.
These vendor-specific engine integrations promise the best of both worlds: support for both OpenXR and for unique features not yet present in OpenXR. But in Meta's case, on PC, this promise isn't kept. Despite being described as "OpenXR", on PC Meta's Unity and Unreal engines currently only work for Quest Link and Rift headsets, not any other PC VR headset. UploadVR has tested and confirmed this to be the case.
Software developer Matthieu Bucchianeri has been raising this issue in public for months now.
"Since 2024, the OpenXR ecosystem on PC is in bad health," he writes:
"This is not an accident: this concern was reported to Meta early in 2024 via official means in the Khronos group. Meta acknowledged purposedly blocking other platforms from running OpenXR content at that time. This is not a technical limitation: some runtimes (VDXR) have made great efforts to implement “compatibility” modes. There are counter-measures to unblock the content on any platform, but they are very expensive to investigate and implement. This is not a short-coming of OpenXR: as proven with many applications using OVRPlugin with counter-measures enabled, these applications can run on a conformant OpenXR implementation."
"Unfortunately, since 2024, Khronos has refused to take actions to stop Meta’s OVRPlugin destructive initiative towards the PCVR ecosystem. By not taking any actions to resolve the issues created by Meta’s OVRPlugin, Khronos is sending the message that OpenXR is no longer a universal solution for cross-vendor and cross-platform support, that passing the CTS and being conformant mean nothing (conformant runtimes are precluded from running OpenXR apps), and that the OpenXR logo and trademark no longer carry the same significance as before in the PCVR ecosystem."
Starting today, that can be done in five minutes thanks to Gaussian Splatting and Niantic's new WebXR application, Into The Scaniverse, which was developed specifically for Meta Quest.
Niantic's smartphone app Scaniverse has been able to capture environments using Gaussian Splatting for a while now, and with the new release of Into The Scaniverse, you can easily view your Gaussian Splats and those of others using Meta Quest 3(S). All you have to do is open the corresponding website in your Quest browser. It couldn't be easier or quicker.
How to bring your objects and rooms into Meta Quest 3/3S:
- Download Scaniverse from the App Store and create a Scaniverse account in the app.
- Select "Splat" for the scan option and scan an object or room in 1-3 minutes. The app will give you tips on how to make good 3D scans.
- Go to the library, select the splat you have created and share it: either by choosing "Post to Map" (public) or by tapping on "Share link" (private). If you choose "Share link", you don't have to do anything else and can close the sharing window that pops up.
- Launch the browser in your Meta Quest and navigate to intothescaniverse.com.
- Select "Profile" in the WebXR application and connect the Meta Quest to your Scaniverse account by entering the code into the Scaniverse app. To do this, go to Library > Settings (gear icon) > Authorize Meta Quest.
- Back in VR, your Gaussian Splat should now be available for selection. Select it and click on the crystal in front of you to dive into your splat.
