Keoken once employed 45 people but by March 2024 had scaled down to 20. Game Developer reported that four members we let go that month, while the studio prepared its 'last resort': publishing details of five prototypes it was working on and a video calling for funding and support, which the studio asked its community to share ahead of GDC.
We spoke to Keon Deetman about the studio's struggles and the state of the industry last month, where he told us he and Paul had gone without a salary for several months, but it still had not resolved the studio's situation.
Update: Keon Deetman has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that 13 people have been affected by the layoffs, including 11 full-time employees and two freelance contractors. Only he and Paul remain at the studio.
The Deetmans are currently preparing a Kickstarter campaign for Deliver Us Home, the next entry in the series that began with 2018's Deliver Us The Moon.
Korea will focus on fostering its console game sector over the next five years as part of efforts revive the country's game industry, the culture ministry said Wednesday.
Under the five-year plan to promote the game industry, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will work to expand the country's share in the global console game market by 2028, aiming to reduce its heavy dependence on online and mobile game platforms.
Korea has the fourth-biggest game industry in the world in terms of sales, posting a combined revenue of 22.2 trillion won ($16.04 billion) in 2022, driven by the growth of online and mobile games.
However, the country's share of the global console game market is only 1.5 percent, which constitutes 28 percent of the entire industry, with mobile games accounting for 44 percent, according to the ministry. Also, more than 40 percent of gamers in North America and Europe play console games, the ministry added.
The government said it will help local companies cooperate with major global console game companies, like Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, to develop blockbuster titles. It also plans to provide support to independent game companies for the development of a wider range of video games. (Yonhap)

“Codename ‘Kestrel’ showed early promise, but the project was still in its early concept stage,” said Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala in a press release. “Our other projects have advanced well and are moving to the next stages of development, and increasing focus on them provides us with benefits. We can reallocate talented ‘Kestrel’ developers to these other game projects, and many of our support functions get additional focus on their operations. This is yet another means to ensure that our game projects continue advancing well. I want to thank our ‘Kestrel’ development team. Though we decided to discontinue the project for wider Remedy benefits, our team has done good work and provided us with valuable learnings. I also want to thank Tencent for their partnership so far. They have been very professional and supportive.”
